Paul Ritchie - Mission Statement

I am a biologist seeking to use art and design to connect people with the natural world. I want to share visual messages about our natural and cultural heritage so that we retain a ‘sense of place’ for our unique local landscapes. I developed my skills as an artist and designer on a UAL Foundation Diploma and consolidated my creative practice using drawing, printing, collage, typography and mask-making. I found the artwork of Corita Kent and Henri Matisse inspiring and both artists left me feeling that less can be more.

I am an experienced storyteller with a message about how we are losing wildlife and our connection with nature. I share my lived experience and learning about trees and woodlands to encourage people and communities to learn about their local landscapes. I use my art and design to help deliver visual narratives that encourage audiences to engage with my storytelling and our cultural heritage. I want to help local communities ‘rewild’ and people to improve their wellbeing by experiencing art, nature and culture through motivating activities.

Common threads of my career have been engaging communities, teaching ecology & conservation, and training individuals & groups. Paul the learner, the trainer, the conservator, the facilitator & teacher. So what next? Paul the community artist?
