This was a proposal to plan and facilitate a trial community art project working in partnership with Mole Valley District Council (Dorking) and other local community groups and individuals.

What? To provide a six-week programme of 3-hr nature-inspired group art sessions for adults, that will include hybrid learning activities, demonstrations and supported creative practice.

Why? Nature journaling helps individuals and communities, by improving mental and emotional wellbeing; enhancing learning and cognitive development; encouraging social interaction and cohesiveness; and helping people to reconnect to the natural world in a mutually supportive and creative environment.

Participation will improve observation, critical thinking, personal focus and creativity. This programme will help participants to capture moments of creative joy and wonder, foster a greater appreciation for art and nature and make new friendships.

Where? The Morning Room at Pippbrook House, Dorking

When? Friday 17 April to Friday 22 May 2026 1.30pm – 4.30pm

Who? Working with Claudia Cartwright, Arts Development Officer, MVDC I facilitate the sessions with help from 5-6 other members of our own adult art club. The other participants are members of the local community who want to development their creative skills, connect with nature and meet like-minded people in a safe place.

How? Nature journaling is the practice of recording observations, thoughts, and experiences of the local wildlife and nature using reflective words, written expressions, ideas, sketches, photos, or other creative practice in a notebook, sketchbook or diary.

This course is helping participants foster a deeper connection with the natural world and their cultural heritage by focusing attention, sparking curiosity, and improving observation skills. There are no rules, allowing for personal styles ranging from scientific records to artistic interpretations to create a vivid and memorable record of their experiences.

We are providing a six-week programme hybrid learning activity, practical demonstration and creative practice in an accessible, safe and supportive group environment. Participants have the opportunity to learn transferable skills, share ideas and gain inspiration.
